Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) is the framework that ensures everything we produce is safe, consistent, and high-quality. At Pet Blood Bank, this means that every stage of collecting, testing, processing, storing, and supplying blood is carefully controlled to protect the welfare of our donors and the safety of our recipients.
Because we hold an NFABBA (Non-Food Animal Blood Bank Authorisation) licence, following GMP isn’t optional — it’s at the heart of how we operate each day
Why is GMP important?
Completing this GMP course is a statutory requirement for everyone working within Pet Blood Bank UK — whether your role is clinical, operational, or administrative. (A statutory requirement means it’s written into law under the Veterinary Medicines Regulations and enforced by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, or VMD.)
GMP gives us a shared way of working that protects product quality, animal welfare, and the trust of every client and donor. It ensures that we all play our part in maintaining compliance, safety, and consistency — no matter our role.
There are ten golden rules of GMP
These classic principles form the foundation of good practice in any regulated environment:
Having appropriate facilities
Having validated processes
Writing and following good Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Identifying who does what
Keeping good records
Training and developing staff
Practicing good hygiene
Maintaining facilities and equipment
Building quality into everything we do
Performing regular audits
At Pet Blood Bank, we’ve grouped these rules into four key learning themes to make them easier to apply in our daily work:
Cleanliness and Tidiness – keeping our environments organised, hygienic, and controlled.
Errors and Mistakes – recognising that errors can happen, reporting them quickly, and learning from them.
Good Documentation Practice – recording what we do, when we do it, clearly and accurately.
Confidentiality – protecting donor, recipient, and organisational information always.
Key Takeaway
By following GMP every day, we make sure the blood and blood products we provide are collected and processed safely, consistently, and to the highest standards. Quality is everyone’s responsibility — whatever your role, you play an important part in protecting the animals we help and the people who rely on us.
